Gifts to the Nation from Mr. and Mrs. John Hay Whitney
    Closed January 3, 1999
The painting depicts a coastal scene. A rocky shore in warm tones of orange, brown, red, and purple is closest to us, with two boats and a simple structure visible near the center of the painting. There is another boat closer to us, by the water near the bottom edge of the painting. The horizon line is almost at the top of the painting, with a range of mountains faintly visible against a strip of pale-purple sky, past the large body of water. The water is a light blue color, stretching from the rocky shore on the right to the distant mountains. The paint has been applied with small dot-like brushstrokes of reds, oranges, blues, and purples.
Winslow Homer and the Civil War
    Closed September 21, 1997
The artwork is a horizontal watercolor and pencil sketch depicting a scene of a caravan with covered wagons at rest. In the foreground, several figures are seated or reclining on the ground. Two figures are prominently shown in the center, one lying down wearing a brown jacket and blue pants, and another sitting beside them. Other figures, sketched more faintly, are seated around a small campfire with pots visible, with smoke rising above them. The wagons, with their distinctive arched covers, form a backdrop, positioned in a rough semi-circle. The color palette is muted, with earthy tones dominating the scene.
    Encounters with Modern Art
    Closed January 26, 1997
Angular, geometric shapes in charcoal and smoke black, pewter and silver gray, white, pale pink, and coral orange pile up to form a rough pyramid shape that fills the height of this square, abstract painting. More fragmented shapes in cobalt, azure, and light blue fill the upper left and right corners to either side of the apex, and one triangular space on its middle left. The artist has inscribed, “LA PROCESSION SEVILLE” in black capital letters near the top right edge and “Picabia” in the lower right.
Gauguin Drawings from the Armand Hammer Collection
    Closed November 10, 1996
This is an image of two separate sketches side by side. On the left, there is a sketch of a monkey's head and a rough outline of a house with a chimney. On the right, there is a more detailed drawing of a figure possibly sitting, with their head slightly ducked and hands positioned in front, depicted with a colored hat and clothes. The drawing on the right is rendered in a sketchy, loose style with some colored accents.
    James McNeill Whistler
    Closed August 20, 1995
The image shows an aerial view of a sandy terrain with a horizon line separating the sky from a strip of water where there is a dark shape resembling a ship. The brushstrokes are soft, creating a blurred effect. The color palette is mainly sandy beiges and taupes with darker spots indicating people and structures dispersed across the area. Human figures are mostly silhouettes. In the distance, there is a suggestion of a building and clusters of people. The tones of the building blend with the surroundings, directing focus towards the distant clusters of activity.
    The Touch of the Artist
    Closed January 28, 1996
This drawing is a sketch of several people facing the left, depicted from the chest up. The individuals are standing together in a group. Their hair is in a variety of styles, and they are dressed in draped garments. The person at the front of the group has their hands clasped together in front of their chest. The background is plain beige paper, and the lines of the drawing have been done in red.
    Winslow Homer
    Closed January 28, 1996
This painting shows a pastoral landscape from a slightly elevated viewpoint. Closest to us, two sheep are lying down on a shaded green slope next to a person on the right, who is wearing a dark red garment with a blue headscarf. The person lays in the grass, resting one head on their hand, looking to the right. The person seems to have peach-toned skin, although details of their face are hard to discern. There appears to be a brown basket next to them. In the background, more white sheep graze across rolling green hills illuminated with light. On the left are a grove of tall trees, which cast shadows on the grassy ground. There are more green trees near the top right corner, below a cloudy blue sky. The brushstrokes in the painting are thick and visible.
Hans Memling's Saint John the Baptist and Saint Veronica

A woman sitting close to us in front of a deep landscape holds up a white cloth with the image of a man’s face on it in this vertical painting. The woman and the image on the cloth both have pale skin, hooded eyes, and long, straight noses. The woman’s shoulders are squared toward us, and her legs are tucked under her. Her head tips slightly to our right. Her eyes are downcast, and her bow-shaped lips are parted. She wears a white, turban-like headdress with a white veil covering her neck and upper chest. Her rose-pink dress is mostly covered by a voluminous, lapis-blue robe falling from the back of the headdress to the ground, where it puddles in angular folds. On the white cloth she holds up, the man’s head has chin-length blond hair and a beard. He looks out at us with light brown eyes. The woman sits on a grassy field. A dirt path cuts through a shallow valley across the picture, not far behind the woman. More harvest-yellow and moss-green hills roll back to a town with gray stone buildings with blue roofs along the horizon, which comes three-quarters of the way up the composition. The sky above deepens from white at the horizon to azure blue across the top of the painting.
Drawings of Landscape and Architecture from the Armand Hammer Collection
    Closed November 6, 1994
The image is a sketch depicting a rural scene. The point of view presents a path curving away from us and extending into the distance, flanked by fields. The horizon is marked by a line of trees. The sketch uses light pencil work with faint shading and outline. Close to us, a figure with an animal walks along the path. Sparse details on the left show fields, while to the right, a tree and fence posts create a boundary. The color palette is monochromatic, using natural tones and shadows of pencil on paper.

Five sketches in brown ink are spaced around a vertically oriented sheet of paper. In the top left quadrant, a bearded man faces our right in profile. He has short, curly hair, a deeply lined face, a pronounced underbite, and the tip of his long nose points down. Two independent, wrinkle-lined eyes are sketched in the top right quadrant of the page. Below are two drawings of women with their shoulders angled away from us to the right. Near the bottom left and smaller in scale, a woman looks over her shoulder at us with a slight smile on her lips. In the bottom right quadrant, a woman with her hair pulled back under a snood looks to our right in profile with her chin tipped up. The neckline of both women’s bodices dip across the shoulder blades in the back. The paper is speckled with faint brown stains and spots.
