People walk or stand along a city street in front of buildings outlined in amethyst purple and hung with flags in this loosely painted, vertical composition. In the bottom quarter of the canvas, the people are painted with a few strokes of brown, pale blue, dark purple, or pale pink. Two four or five-story buildings fill most of the rest of the composition. Four flags flutter from flagpoles along a balcony or arcade on the central building. Two flags have blue crosses outlined in white against red backgrounds. One other is vertically striped with blue, white, and then red, and the fourth has a yellow cross on a blue background. The upper-story exterior walls of the buildings and the sky are mottled parchment white with a few touches of very pale pink or yellow. The artist signed the painting in the lower left corner, “Raoul Dufy 1906.”

Shown from the waist up, a woman with a crimson-red face, dark brown eyes, and a black and white garment faces and looks out at us in this stylized, vertical portrait painting. Her face is painted as a flat field of vibrant red outlined with teal green. Her features are outlined in black, and her closed lips are light gray. Her hair is pulled back under a black head covering that falls over her shoulders. The headdress seems to be layered with a headband with bright yellow polka dots against spring green. Her dress is painted with thick, charcoal-gray lines and circles against a white background. The brushstrokes are visible throughout, especially on the garment. In the background behind her, a field of ivory white is contained within bands of steel gray above, along the top edge of the canvas, and below, behind her shoulders. Beyond her body, in the lower left corner, is a patch of sky blue.

A man bows his bald head deeply as he rests his splayed elbows on his thighs in this freestanding plaster sculpture. The long toes of the man’s feet nearly touch, and they are angled to our right in this photograph. He sits on a low surface, also sculpted from plaster, and his long limbs create a cage around his hollowed chest. The surface of the plaster is ivory white in some areas and parchment brown in others. The piece rests on a gray pedestal against gray walls.

This painting presents a series of curved and bending lines intersecting with each other in an abstract pattern. The lines create a design resembling tree branches and leafy canopies. The background displays a mix of blue, yellow, and pink colors. At the base of the trees there are two red shapes that could be compared to small animals or creatures amidst the abstract landscape; one of them perches in a tree, while the other is on the ground, looking up.

In saturated, vivid tones of mint green, marigold orange, dandelion yellow, sky blue, and rose pink, a long building stretches away from us along a walkway. The narrow end of the building facing us to the right is orange, and the long side is frosty green. The roof is painted garnet red, and the windows are created with slashes of midnight blue and dark red outlined with topaz blue. A wall enclosing the structure is lemon-lime yellow, and a fence in front of that is painted ultramarine blue. The walkway beneath the fence is pink and, to the left of that, pale blue. Two trees painted with twisting lines of ruby red, shamrock green, black, and off white edge into the scene along the left side, and the sky is lapis blue around a mint-green halo that surrounds the building’s roofline and walls. The scene is loosely painted with visible brushstrokes throughout.

An abstracted jug, bottles, shapes reminiscent of balled up paper or fabric, and a needle-like letter opener are gathered on a wood square in this horizontal still life painting. Rectangles in shades of corn yellow, violet purple, burgundy red-and-black checks, white, black, and spruce green splay out behind the objects like untidily stacked placemats. The brown jug is at the center, and an echo of its form in teal blue presumably represents a shadow. Portions of the jug, wooden board, and crumpled material shift color and pattern as they intersect or overlap with other areas. The artist’s initials, “DMR,” are stenciled in yellow in the lower left corner.

The sculpture features an abstract human figure holding a musical instrument. It is crafted in a cubist style with geometric shapes and angular facets that suggest a seated person, their legs crossed and their fingers placed on an instrument with a long neck that stretches horizontally to the right. The sculpture is a dark gray color, and it is positioned upright on a solid base.”

This is a painting of a colorful windmill. The tall windmill dominates the scene, positioned slightly to the right of center. Below is a horizontal strip of land painted in vertical and horizontal lines of green, yellow, blue, orange, purple, and white. The body of the windmill itself is painted in thick lines of white, yellow, and green, with blue shadows. The large blades of the windmill are suggested with lines of green, dark blue, and green, while the pointed roof is purple, black, and dark blue. The sky behind is a chaotic mix of shades of blue, including light blue, teal, blue-gray, and dark blue. Across the painting, the paint has been applied in thick, bold brushstrokes. Each brushstroke is visible, and different colors have been applied directly on top of one another, creating a swirling, fluid effect.

The painting depicts four large vases, each holding large, stylized flowers. There are large white flowers with red and yellow centers, a round yellow flower with a blue center, a red and white flower with red lines in the center, and a small red flower. The first vase on the left is brown with white spots, the second is white with a blue circle, the third is bright blue, and the fourth is tan. Along with the flowers, the vases are filled with tall, dark green leaves. The vases stand on a brown surface, and the wall in the background is painted in a neutral light gray color. There appears to be a poster or image on the wall that shows a green shape with red circles on it. The brushstrokes in this image are large and visible.

This is a painting of four children standing outdoors. Three children are on the left, standing in a circle and holding hands, while a fourth child stands slightly apart on the right, their hands on their head. The children all have pink skin and hair in shades of pale yellow and light brown, and they wear clothes including dresses with aprons in shades of red, purple, orange, pink, pale yellow, and pale green. They appear to wear colorful tights and dark shoes. The background features a blue sky, and the children stand on a patch of yellow ground with green grass in the distance. The brushstrokes are thick and short, creating a sense of movement, and the painting lacks fine details.

Round Dance

This painting depicts four unclothed people in various poses within a lush, natural environment. The people have tan skin and shoulder-length dark hair. Two on the right appear to be women, but one on the left has their back to us, and another in the center is sitting on the ground, their knee raised and covering much of their torso. The people aren't drawn with clear facial features; instead, small dark dots show their eyes, with no detail beyond that. The background shows a dense forest or garden with green, brown, and hints of red brushstrokes indicating leaves, trees, and grass. In the background, a blue shape could indicate water nearby.

A man and woman with pale, pink-colored skin hold hands and dance in this stylized, abstracted vertical painting. The woman’s breasts are exposed, and a single teal-green cloth edged in sapphire blue appears to encase both of their torsos. The man is behind the woman just to our left, and he looks down at her. Her shoulders face us, but she looks back at him, both in profile. Their faces are each painted with one or two strokes each for eyebrows, eyes, lips, and, for the man, a nose. Their hands are lifted and joined, blending into single forms, and the woman takes a wide step to our left. Their bodies are outlined with maroon red, black, or slate blue. The background is ice blue interspersed with angular, tent-like forms painted in royal blue, pale blue, and maroon. The frame is shown and reveals that the painting was done on the back of a stretched canvas. A label affixed to the top rail reads “Nachl. E.L. Kirchner TA/BH 19.”
