Artwork history & notes
Provenance
Colonel Henry Thomas Chapman, Jr. [1837-1912], Brooklyn, by 1897 until at least 1911;[1]; (his estate sale, Anderson Galleries, New York, 27-29 January 1913, 3rd day, no. 357, as Portrait of Isaac De Peyster). (Ehrich Galleries, New York), at least in 1930.[2] private collection;[3] (sale, Plaza Art Galleries, New York, 13 April 1938, no. 57, same lot as NGA 1963.10.135, bought in); purchased through (Cornelius Michaelsen Gallery, New York) by Chester Dale [1883-1962], New York; bequest 1963 to NGA.
[1] Chapman lent this and NGA 1963.10.134 to the Brooklyn Museum until January 1911 (letter of 28 April 1938 from John I.H. Baur to Mary Bullard, copy in NGA curatorial files).
[2] The Frick Art Reference Library in New York purchased photographs of NGA 1963.10.134 and .135 from Ferargil Galleries in New York in 1944. The notes that accompanied the photographs had been sent to Ferargil in December 1930 by Ehrich Galleries, when the latter offered the pair of portraits for sale to Ferargil. (Letter of 24 January 1956 from Mrs. Henry W. Howell, Jr., to Mrs. William Sawitzky, sent to John Walker and in NGA curatorial files)
[3] Notes in the Chester Dale collection records (copy in NGA curatorial files) indicate that the consignor to the 1938 sale bought the two portraits (this and NGA 1963.10.135) from Colonel Chapman or his son.
