The image shows two individuals sitting from the chest upwards. The person on the left has curly dark hair and a side profile. The person on the right is closer to the foreground, wearing a cap and visibly showing a nose and mustache. Both individuals wear simple late 19th-century clothing. The person on the right appears to be holding a pipe. The background contains various sailing ships with tall masts docked at a harbor. In the distance are more ships and outlines of buildings under a cloudy sky. The scene is framed within architectural features that indicate a waterfront view, possibly from inside a structure.
