English Mezzotints from the Rosenwald Collection

The image is viewed from a low angle, looking up slightly towards the horizon where the glow of a large sun or moon is obscured by clouds, casting a soft and diffused light over the scene. The horizon is blurred and indistinct, with vague shapes suggesting hills or rocky formations. Close to us, the dark shapes of these formations are more pronounced, creating a contrast against the lighter sky. The silhouette of a stag with large antlers is visible towards the right side of the image, partially obscured by shadows and mist. The brushstrokes are soft and wispy, giving a dreamlike quality to the image. The color palette consists of muted shades of gray and black, with subtle variations contributing to the misty atmosphere of the scene.
Francis Seymour Haden, An Early Riser, 1897, mezzotint (with etching?) in green, Rosenwald Collection, 1943.3.4752
