Overview: 63 19th-century American paintings included Hudson River landscapes, trompe l'oeil still lifes, genre scenes, impressionist landscapes, and figure paintings. The National Gallery of Art and the Detroit Institute of Arts organized this first public exhibition of works from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Richard A. Manoogian.

Organization: Exhibition curators were Nicolai Cikovsky Jr., curator of American painting and deputy senior curator of paintings at the National Gallery; Nancy Rivard Shaw, curator of American art at the Detroit Institute of Arts; and Franklin Kelly, curator of collections at the Corcoran Museum of Art and previously curator of American art at the National Gallery. Gaillard Ravenel and Mark Leithauser designed the exhibition, and Gordon Anson designed the lighting.
