Overview: The exhibition of 53 sculptures was the first major survey of Tilman Riemenschneider's work in nearly 70 years. Altarpiece sculpture, cult figures, and objects for private devotion were included. A selection of sculpture by such predecessors and contemporaries as Niclaus Gerhaert van Leyden and Veit Stoss was shown as well.

Organization: The exhibition was organized by the National Gallery of Art, Washington, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Julien Chapuis, assistant curator, Department of Medieval Art and the Cloisters, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and John Hand, curator of northern Renaissance paintings at the National Gallery of Art, coordinated the exhibition.

Sponsor: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany supported the exhibition. The exhibition and catalogue were also supported by grants from the Samuel H. Kress Foundation and The Circle of the National Gallery of Art. The exhibition was supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities.
