Old Master Drawings from Chatsworth

Three individuals are depicted in ornate niche-like spaces framed by classical architectural elements. The person on the left has a long beard and is wearing a long, brown robe with a hood, holding a staff. In the center, a male figure with long dark hair, dressed in a blue garment and holding a cross, is supported by a large wooden staff. The figure on the right is dressed in a pale robe edged with gold, with a pink drape around the shoulders, long wavy hair, and a halo, holding a palm. Foliage design is atop the architectural framing. The background shows a pale blue sky with light clouds, green fields, and distant buildings to the right.
Raffaellino del Garbo, The "Chief Framer", Saint Roch between Saints Anthony Abbot and Catherine of Alexandria, c. 1485/1495, gouache and brown wash heightened with white on laid paper, Woodner Collection, Patrons' Permanent Fund, 1991.190.1.h

Overview: 114 drawings by 53 artists were lent from the Devonshire collection by the Trustees of the Chatsworth Settlement. This was the 8th show of European drawings to be organized by Annemarie Pope and circulated by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service.

Director John Walker's opening dinner at the Sulgrave Club for the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire took place during the week of the Cuban missile crisis; thus there were many empty seats at the tables. Missing were President and Mrs. John F. Kennedy, Secretary of State Dean Rusk, and other top officials.

Attendance: 26,318
