The artwork features a large, abstract rectangular shape in the center, predominantly in a deep brown hue. Surrounding this central shape is a darker border that frames the rectangle, creating a contrast between the two areas. The composition is simple and bold.

This painting depicts a busy scene on a frozen river or lake, filled with a crowd of people. The horizon is in the center, showing boats and low buildings in the distance. Closer to us, many people are engaged in different activities on the ice. Some ride in a horse-drawn sled, while others play a game with long sticks and small round balls. The people wear colorful clothing in shades of red, blue, yellow, green, and black. Some of the women wear elaborate gowns with ruffled collars, while the men wear colorful suits and wide-brimmed hats. Other people wear simpler jackets and trousers. A few dogs run on the ice among the crowds. Aside from the colorful clothing, the color palette is mostly shades of cream, light gray, and pale blue.

From Impressionism to Modernism: The Chester Dale Collection

83 paintings selected from the Chester Dale Collection at the National Gallery of Art were shown in this exhibition, which was on view while West Building main floor French galleries were being renovated. This was the first exhibition in 45 years devoted to works donated by the collector. The exhibition was organized by subject to emphasize areas the Dales focused on in their collecting, including portraits and figure painting, landscapes, and still lifes.

Four light-skinned ballerinas with russet-orange hair tied back in buns adjust the straps of their bodices as they gather close together, their bodies and wide, knee-length tutus taking up the left half of this horizontal painting. The background or backdrop beyond them shows a grove of deep green trees to our left and a sunset view of meadows leading back to trees to our right. Three of the dancers stand in a row that extends from the lower left corner to our right and away from us. All three wear rust-orange bodices over tutus that are painted loosely with flecks of pale celery green and buttercup yellow against a muted royal-blue background. Their bodices and upper bodies are outlined with black. The woman closest to us stands with her body angled to our right. Her face turns away as she looks to her left and adjusts that shoulder strap. The two dancers farther from us stand with their backs to us, their bodies angled away from us to our left. The middle dancer looks back over her right shoulder as she lifts the other elbow to adjust that strap. The third dancer in the row holds both hands to her right strap as she looks off into the distance, to our left. The fourth ballerina, to our far left beyond this trio, stands with the arm we can see, her left, lifted with her hand held high as she looks off to our right. Her bodice is a brighter carrot orange, and is more loosely painted. The green foliage behind the dancers extends off the top edge of the painting. The pale sage-green field to the right stretches before puffy, rounded trees daubed with mauve-pink highlights. The coral-pink and golden yellow sky is streaked with lavender-gray clouds. The artist signed his name in red paint with tiny, almost illegible letters in the lower right corner, “Degas.”

Bold strokes and fainter smudges of black, blue, red, brown, and white dance across a white ground in this painting to suggest an abstracted seascape. A long, horizontal black line three-quarters of the way up the canvas suggests the horizon line. An arched line above seems supported by diagonal lines at the left and right edge, to suggest the span of an arched bridge in the distance. Blue squiggles are mostly contained within the center of the composition to suggest water while brown lines and red marks fill the lower corners, perhaps alluding to a beach or shoreline. The artist signed the work with black letters and the date in the lower right corner: “Marin 52.” The frame has been painted white in the corners and tan on each side, with darker brown lines separating the alternating bands of white and light brown.

The image depicts two individuals shown from the waist up. The person on the left is seated, leaning slightly towards the other person, who is on their right. This person has an elegantly styled hairstyle, with curls framing their face and gathered at the back. They are wearing a voluminous, ruffled garment that appears to be a dress. The other person to the right is slightly leaning in, appearing to speak closely to the first person. This individual also has wavy, slightly longer hair swept back and is dressed in a loose-fitting, billowy shirt. Both individuals are sharing the seat of an ornately carved chair with floral patterns on its backrest. The first person has a gentle, serene expression while the second person's face is partially obscured. In the surroundings, soft edges and muted tones suggest an intimate atmosphere.
