Georges de La Tour and His World
    Closed January 5, 1997
A young woman with pale skin sits at a table in a darkened room in this vertical painting. Long chestnut-brown hair drapes over her shoulder and her deep, cream-colored, long-sleeved garment is open at her neck. She rests her chin in her right hand, farther from us, as her left reaches for a skull placed on a thick book on the table in front of her. The scene is lit by a single candle mostly out of sight behind the skull. Shown in profile, she looks into a small mirror next to the skull, which reflects that object and the book.

    Closed July 21, 1996
Thickly painted, rectangular vertical and horizontal slabs in intense buttercup and mango yellow, shamrock and lime green, burnt orange, raspberry pink, and charcoal gray are layered in this nearly square, abstract composition. In the top half, shapes are smaller, closer together, and separated by strokes of moss green. In the bottom half, the shapes are larger and seem to float against a vivid orange background. Smaller swipes and dabs of cotton candy pink, plum purple, indigo blue, sea glass green, scarlet red, rust brown, and bright white are interspersed around the slabs. The artist signed and dated the painting in green paint in the lower right corner, “hans hofmann 57.”
    Adolph Menzel (1815-1905)
    Closed January 5, 1997
The image shows a woman seated with her arms on her bent knees. She has dark, center-parted hair and wears a long white dress. She appears relaxed with a slightly tilted head and a soft facial expression. The background is a plain, neutral-colored surface.

Two men with pale skin, wearing white sleeveless shirts and royal-blue caps, row in unison in a long, narrow boat on a placid blue river in this horizontal landscape painting. The low, honey-colored wooden boat extends off both sides of the canvas. Both men face our left as they row to our right. The man in front looks ahead of him, beyond the stern of the boat, and the man to our right, closer to the bow, tucks his chin down to look past his shoulder. Their bare, muscled arms are extended straight as the two oars sweep back. The tip of another boat runs close and parallel to the bottom edge of the composition, spanning the left three-quarters of the painting. The opposite riverbank is lined with a dense forest of pine-green trees. People crowd along the decks of a steamboat and a paddleboat near the riverbank to our left. Another narrow skuller, rowed by four people wearing ruby-red shirts, cuts through the water at the back center of the river. The riverbank beyond is lined with people, painted with strokes of black and white, and minuscule touches of red. The horizon comes halfway up the composition. Cream-white clouds float across a muted, topaz-blue sky above the trees.
    The Art of Louis-Léopold Boilly

Prints by James McNeill Whistler and His Contemporaries
    Closed December 31, 1995
The image shows a view of a calm body of water with a horizon line approximately one third from the bottom. Along the horizon, there are ships with tall masts, including a large ship slightly left of center. To the right, there are buildings, possibly a cityscape, with a tall structure resembling a lighthouse or tower. The image features soft, blur-like brushstrokes, creating a dreamlike quality. The color palette consists of monochromatic tones of gray, enhancing the serene atmosphere of the scene.
    The Glory of Venice
    Closed April 23, 1995
The image depicts a view overlooking a body of water. Near the center of the image is a building with a flag on the horizon, surrounded by small trees and distant structures suggesting a shoreline. In the water are multiple small boats and gondolas with people rowing or managing them. The brushstrokes are delicate and fluid, using an ink wash technique for a soft atmosphere. The color palette is dominated by warm sepia tones, enhancing the peaceful ambiance. Boats are strategically placed in the composition, leading the viewer's gaze through the scene.
Recent Acquisitions of Works of Art on Paper
    Closed December 31, 1995
The image shows an array of shapes and lines in an abstract scene. In the foreground, there are dark angular shapes resembling hat silhouettes with faintly sketched faces. The background consists of a pattern of scattered green brushstrokes on a light backdrop. A rich blue border at the top hints at a sky or horizon. The composition blends familiar objects like hats, leaves, and faces with an abstract quality.
    Claes Oldenburg
    Closed May 7, 1995
The sculpture depicts a collection of pies arranged in a vertical stack inside a transparent display case. The case is made of a clear material with a metallic frame. Each pie is placed on a separate shelf within the unit, with one resting on the top of the case. The door to the case is ajar. The pies are round and placed in silver pie tins, and they are each decorated differently, with colors including golden-brown, white, yellow, red, and blue. The background is plain gray.
    Piet Mondrian: 1872-1944
    Closed September 4, 1995
This abstract, geometric painting has been tipped on one corner to create a diamond form rather than a square. The surface of the canvas is crisscrossed by an irregular grid of black lines running vertically and horizontally like offset ladders. The black lines create squares and rectangles of different sizes, and the width of the lines vary slightly. One complete square sits at the center of the composition and is painted white. Other rectangles are incomplete, their corners sliced by the edge of the canvas, and each is a different shade of white with hints of pale blue and gray. The black grid creates triangular forms where it meets the angled edge of the canvas in some places, and some of these are filled with flat areas of color. A tomato-red triangle is placed to the left of the top center point, and a vibrant yellow triangle is to the left of the lower center point. A black triangle is next to it at the bottom center, and a cobalt-blue triangle is situated just below the right point. The painting is signed with the artist’s initials at the lower center: “PM.”
