    Rembrandt Etchings
    Closed March 21, 1961
The image shows a gathering of people in an interior setting. Several individuals are standing, clustered around a central figure kneeling and presenting a swaddled child. The central person has a beard and long robe, kneeling on the ground, focused on the child. Other individuals in the scene have distinct facial features, with headpieces and various facial hair styles among the men. The clothing is elaborate, with flowing robes and detailed textures. Many figures appear to be observing or gesturing towards the child. An animal, potentially a dog, sits in the lower-left corner. Overhead, a bird-like figure surrounded by a radiant light is depicted near the top center. The background suggests an interior space with heavy shadows, creating a sense of depth, while the architecture is defined by archways or curved surfaces.

Warm light pours onto white stone and brown brick buildings in a grassy landscape in this horizontal painting. Tiny people walk, stand, sit, and work across the turf, among the buildings, and over a bridge spanning a canal to our right. The people wear long-sleeved shirts, vests, britches, stockings, dresses, hats, and caps in shades of straw yellow, olive green, apple red, muted blue, brown, and bright white. Touches of peach paint suggest they are all pale skinned. The people closest to us are three men working along what might be the remains of a stone foundation in the lower left corner. One raises an instrument while another crouches nearby on the far side of the structure, and the third leans on our side, looking down at the grass. The land rises gently back to the end of a row of structures to our left. A thick-trunked tree with a sparse canopy is halfway between those structures and a building on our side of the bridge, in the center of the composition. That bone-white structure has engaged columns with capitals, a tiled roof, and a round, gazebo-like lantern or bell tower. A brick wall between more buildings line a lane beyond the tree and these structures, and rooflines pile up along the horizon, which comes halfway up the composition. People and children stand and sit on the grassy knoll or walk along the lane. The canal angles from the lower right corner of the canvas to the center of the horizon. The walls of the canal are built with thin layers of peach and tan-colored stone. Close to us, the wall on our side jogs to our left, creating an inlet or bay. A staircase cuts into the far wall to allow access to the water. Boats steered by men using long sticks carry people or supplies. A more elaborate covered boat, likely a ferry, pulls up to the base of the stairs. The stairs lead up to a plaza, which is lined with peanut-brown buildings with terracotta-brown roofs. People and dogs mill about the square and cross the bridge beyond the ferry. Some smoky-purple clouds drift into the scene from the left against an otherwise clear blue sky.

This is a drawing of a scene in a room filled with artwork and music. The detailed interior portrays a group of people engaged in various activities. In the foreground, a man is seated at a keyboard instrument, while a group of people surrounding him is interacting. The room's walls are adorned with framed paintings, adding to the opulence of the environment. The scene conveys a sense of 18th-century elegance and decadence, with rich clothing and elaborate wigs suggesting wealth and sophistication. Each figure in the scene is active, contributing to the lively atmosphere of the gathering.

The sculpture is a relief featuring multiple human figures walking and engaging with each other. The figures are of various sizes and include men, women, and children. They are depicted in dynamic postures, with some figures carrying smaller figures or objects. The sculpture is crafted in a dark brown material resembling bronze. The figures suggest motion and interaction, with limited facial detail. The relief is set against a textured background of the same material, creating depth. The piece is rectangular and bordered, framing the scene within it.

The image shows a low perspective scene near water with a boat at the bottom. The horizon is marked by the water's edge and stone structures. A large architectural arch is central, leading toward buildings and a street. The artwork features light and intricate brushstrokes, with a monochromatic color palette of earth tones and sepia. Faint outlines of figures near the archway suggest subtle activity in a canal-side setting.

The image displays a landscape scene seen from an elevated point. The horizon stretches across the center of the composition with distant landforms meeting a calm expanse of water or sky. The brushstrokes exhibit a detailed and meticulous technique, conveying textures of trees and foliage. The color palette is a warm sepia tone. Closest to us, a figure is seated on the ground surrounded by trees and shrubs. Remnants of structures can be seen to the right, partially hidden among trees.

The image shows a horse-drawn carriage viewed from slightly above and behind. The rear of the carriage is visible, with two figures inside: a man in a light-colored hat and a woman in a red hat. A dog follows the carriage, moving towards the bottom right. The carriage is driven by a horse on a pale pathway, with a high horizon showing a sky with pastel clouds and green fields. The brushstrokes are light and fluid in an impressionist style, with a color palette of soft yellows, greens, and blues.

From behind a low stone wall, on which a young woman with pale skin sits, we look across a wide, shimmering blue waterway toward a town along the opposite shore, under a pale blue sky with wispy white clouds in this horizontal landscape painting. The caramel-brown, stone wall runs across the lower right corner, into the distance to our right. The woman sits on our side of the wall with her legs angled to our right, and she twists to lean onto her right hand, on our left, as she looks down toward the water. Her brown hair and face are shaded by the pale, shell-pink umbrella she holds in her left hand, to our right. She wears an ankle-length white dress with long sleeves, and a touch of white on the black hat she wears suggests it is decorated with a flower. The waterway seems to be lined with smooth walls like a canal. Ships with black hulls and wooden masts nearly span the passageway and reflect in the surface of the water beyond the woman. The shore across from us is lined with a row of deep green trees in front of a cluster of cream-white buildings with charcoal-gray roofs. More buildings are visible in the distance on our side of the waterway. The scene is loosely painted so many details are difficult to make out, especially in the woman’s face. The artist signed the work in dark paint at the lower center: “B Morisot.”

Three small children with pale pink skin sit and stand among a group of animals to our right as a group of eight indigenous people with light brown skin gather with eight white-skinned men near a riverbank in the distance to our left in this horizontal painting. The children and animals take up the right two-thirds of the composition. They gather on a flat-topped spit of land, which is covered in grass. All three children have blond hair and rounded features. Two sit on the ground at the bottom center of the painting. The largest animal is a caramel-brown bull, which stands next to a pale golden lion. The other animals are smaller in scale, and include a tiger, wolf, sheep, goats, cows, bears, and a jaguar, all sitting or standing at rest around the bull and lion. At the top center of the group of animals, one child stands over the lion’s back and has one arm around the tiger’s shoulders, and another child at the lower center touches the jaguar’s nose. A tree with olive-green, rust-red, and harvest-yellow leaves grows up the right edge of the canvas, in front of a tall, forest-green bush. On another spit of flat-topped, elevated grassy land to our left, six of the indigenous people stand in a row, wearing feathered headdresses. Two more kneel in front, creating a U-shape. The two in front wear loin cloths, and all eight wear gold earrings and necklaces. They face a gathering of eight men wearing tricorn hats, long coats, waistcoats, knee-length britches, and stockings in shades of gray, blue, white, brown, and orange. One of these men hold up a roll of cloth lifted out of a chest. Trees with spindly trunks and golden yellow canopies reach into the top corner of the painting along the left edge. The river extends into the distance beyond this group, with pale, sage-green hills carpeted in trees. Puffy white clouds float across a sky that deepens from pale shell pink along the horizon to light blue along the top. The features of the animals and children are painted simply and appear rather flat, giving them an almost cartoonish look.
