Photography and Furnishings: Embodied Memories

During the past year and a half, I have been fortunate to undertake projects that perfectly fit both my personal and academic interests. Blending my love for the arts and the lived environment, my work on the exhibition Photography and the Black Arts Movement, 1955–1985 provided a fitting opportunity to create an interpretative installation. On my first day with the team, we began by visiting collections in warehouse storage. This experience established the tone for our work as we selected works that aptly matched the vibe of the show. As time went on, I explored more archives to uncover media that could be displayed as part of the installation, making it as interactive as possible.
The journey to creating the exhibition concerned not only aesthetics but also culture and memory. Each object tells a unique story and bringing them together became a way to reconstruct lived experiences of artists and sitters from decades past—much like the way people curate their own lives.
