Understanding the Index of American Design

Part of Center 45
David Ellinger, Pa. German Plate, c. 1937, watercolor and graphite on paperboard, Index of American Design, 1943.8.3512

Transitioning from our previous placements as interns, I was honored this year to develop my skills in research and narrative writing. Here at the Center, I assumed various research projects and activities under the supervision of many talented staff members. During my time with Steven Nelson, for example, I learned how to navigate through various types of documentation in the archives, imaging, and art collections, as well as on the National Gallery’s intranet. Drafting up stories for the Index of American Design helped me learn a lot about American history and how we define American art. From artist stories, such as that of David Ellinger (1914–2003), I discovered the different forms and materials used for coffeepots, and undertook a material study of pewter. This experience helped me develop not only research skills and a better understanding of collections management but also improved my writing techniques, helping me to be more precise and clear with the information I want my audience to take away.
