  • The composition is a monochromatic etched cluster of six lilies in various stages of growth that emerge from the bottom of a vertical rectangular page. Starting at the bottom of the page, a single dark stem moves up from the center surrounded by small pointed leaves and tightly closed buds curving toward the lower left. Moving up the image, the stem separates into three large white blossoms that overtake the center of the frame. Five of the lilies face us. One lily in the bottom right reveals the back of the petals and base where it connects to the stem. The blossoms have wide flared petals that appear bright against darker surroundings. The flowers are defined with a variety of thick and thin black lines. At the center of the forward-facing lilies, thin stalks with black dots reach outward. Above the main blossoms, the cluster continues with a long, slender bud pointing toward the upper right and another partially opened blossom on the left. These elements form a curved shape that span to the height of the image. The flowers contrast against a background of deep black and dark grey. Scratch marks, straight hatching, and swirling lines fill in the negative space around the cluster. The heavy application of black is concentrated at the bottom of the composition, while the top remains lighter with three patches of deep black.
