  • Two black bands span the height of this vertical canvas against a field of white mottled with shades of ivory, bone, and parchment in this abstract painting. A narrow, solid black stripe lines the left edge of the canvas, like the spine of a book. About a quarter of the way in from the right edge, black paint swirls and wafts like smoke on either side of a narrow white stripe the same color as the background. The artist signed and dated the painting in black paint in the lower right corner of the canvas: “Barnett Newman 1958.”

  • One black and a pair of smoke-gray bands span the height of this otherwise cream-white, vertical, abstract painting. The solid black band is along the left side of the canvas. A faint, slightly darker parchment-brown line fades in and out along its right edge. The pair of gray bands are about three-quarters of the way across the painting from the left. Both are streaky but with crisp edges. The thinner thin gray line is separated from a thicker band with a sliver of white, which is itself lined on each side with black. The artist signed and dated the lower right corner with black paint, “Barnett Newman 1958.”

  • A broad swath of brilliant, crimson-red paint sweeps down from the top edge of this canvas to fill most of this abstract, vertical composition. The sides of the red field are straight, and the bottom edge is irregular. The red is mottled and streaked. The areas to each side of the red field and along the bottom of the canvas are coffee brown. A slender drip of the brown has fallen down the red area, near the right bottom corner. The artist signed and dated the painting near the lower right corner of the red field: “Barnett Newman 1952.”

  • At the center of this abstract composition, a black circle is layered over an area of pale aqua, curving like a rain puddle, against a background of forest green in this nearly square painting. The edge of the black circle is lined with periwinkle blue around the bottom left half. A few streaks of the blue seep or drip into the black circle. Above the center of the large black circle, a delicate white circle is drawn around a small white dot, and a swipe of scarlet red curves around the bottom half of the white circle. The aqua form is serrated at the top right and bulges with curves and spikes around the rest of the circle. One pointed, aqua-colored spike at the bottom left is painted over with swirls and scrolls in the scarlet red and periwinkle blue. More periwinkle blue squiggles and lines are drawn against the aqua field, especially around its perimeter. The area filling the space between the aqua puddle and the edge of the canvas is pine green to the top and left, and is streaked with teal green along the bottom and right edges. The artist signed and dated the work in the lower right corner: “Barnett Newman 1946.”
