  • In the lower center of this black and white, horizontal photograph, a light-skinned child sleeps sitting up against a folded-up lawn chair by the banks of a river. Small in scale against the landscape, the child’s long hair is wet and the eyes are closed, mouth hanging slightly open. A patterned towel is wrapped around the child’s shoulders and meets below the waist, showing a V of bare chest and belly. The towel drapes over the legs. The child sits near the edge of a wood planked deck or dock. The collapsed folding chair has three parts, and it pins a shiny black object, presumably a deflated inner tube, against the post of the railing. The railing extends across the left half of the composition and off that edge. A pair of sneakers and a watermelon sit next to a post supporting the railing halfway along its length. Beyond the deck to our left, the dirt riverbank has some patches of grass. The round canopy of a tree there fills the top left quadrant of the photograph. The river angles toward us from the back left, and the far bank is lined with scrubby brush and trees growing up and over steep, rocky outcroppings. An inflatable alligator and raft sit at the water’s edge on the bank closer to us, to our right of the sleeping child. An unfolded deck chair sits beyond the deck, farther along to our right. Bright sunlight blurs the view at the top center of the photograph and the scene gets darker at the edges and corners. The photograph goes in and out of focus, so the back of the folding chair behind the child and some of the leaves on the tree are in the sharpest focus. The child is slightly blurry as are the other objects and toys. The image becomes notably blurry at the edges.

  • A young woman with flushed, peachy skin stands on a rocky shoreline with a fishing net slung over one shoulder in this horizontal painting. Her body faces us, and she looks off and down to our right. Her left hand, to our right, is planted on her hip, and she clutches the gray net with her other hand. Her head tips toward us as her chin tucks back toward her shoulder. She has a round jaw, a straight nose, and her pink lips are set in a line. Her brown hair is pulled back and up, and bangs sweep across her forehead. Her ash-brown shirt has white stripes around the neck, across the waist, and around the hems of the elbow-length sleeves. Her skirt is painted with strokes of mauve pink and silvery gray. A stiff breeze sweeps the skirt to our left and reveals a glimpse of red stockings over sturdy gray shoes. The dark shoreline angles from the lower left corner to halfway up the right edge of the composition. White water breaks over boulders in the surf beyond. Light reflects brightly along the horizon, which comes just over halfway up the painting. A white bird flies in the pewter-gray sky. The artist signed and dated the painting in red in the lower right corner, “Homer 1897.”

  • Hills roll gently back to a mountain range under a low sky dense with dark clouds in this horizontal black and white photograph. The grassy field closest to us leads back to a few dark cows grazing in a dip in the near distance. Lines and groves of lacy, spindly trees are farther back, surrounding a few structures and houses. Lines of darker trees creating a shallow V across the center of the composition are separated by a gap not far from the buildings. Strips of mountains are layered like torn, cut paper along the horizon, which comes halfway up this composition. Dark clouds roiling in the sky above are alleviated by a band of brighter sky along the mountaintops.
