A highlight of the exhibition was the recently cleaned Small Cowper Madonna in the National Gallery's Widener collection. The exhibition was organized to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the birth of Raphael. The 2-part exhibition examined Raphael's historical importance for American artists and collectors and reevaluated his works in American collections.

Organization: David Alan Brown was the curator. Gaillard Ravenel, Mark Leithauser, and Brown designed the exhibition and Gordon Anson designed the lighting.

Sponsor: The exhibition was supported by a grant from the National Italian American Foundation.
