Pisan 14th Century

c. 1360

Marble  Accession ID  1960.5.14

On View: West Building Main Floor, Gallery M2
A person stands with hands together at the chest in this freestanding, painted wood sculpture. The person’s body faces us and the head turns and looks slightly down to our right in this photograph. Brown hair curls close to the head and down the back of the neck. The skin is ivory white. The almond-shaped eyes are faintly painted, and he has a straight, delicate nose and thin, slightly smiling pink lips. One hand touches his chest and the other is held in front, perhaps with thumbs touching, palm facing our right. White robes lined with indigo blue fall in cascading folds down his body over a rose-pink tunic, and both pool on the octagonal wood base. There are paint losses and small areas of damage throughout but is most noticeable at the bottom. The wood is cracked in the person’s hair.

The Archangel Gabriel

Pisan 14th Century

1325/1350

Wood, polychromed and gilded  Accession ID  1961.9.97

On View: West Building Main Floor, Gallery M2
This wooden, painted, free-standing sculpture is of a young woman standing and holding an open book with one hand and holding the other to her chest. The woman’s skin, gown, and long mantle are painted cream white. The mantle covers the back of her head and has a denim-blue lining visible in the folds around her shoulders, waist, and inside the hanging sleeves. It falls just below her knees and wraps around her long gown. The skirt below her knees has traces of brick red but much of the pigment there is lost. In this photograh, her body is angled to our right but she turns her head to look down in front of us with pale brown eyes. Wavy, brown hair is parted down the middle to frame her face. Her right hand, on our left, is raised to touch her chest while her other hand holds an open book at her waist, its pages facing outward. She stands on an octagonal wooden base painted gold. The surface of the sculpture is cracked, flaking, and worn in some areas, allowing the underlying wood to show through.

She wears a bright pink gown that drapes over her body and is tied with a dark ribbon around her waist. She holds a nude child on her lap. The child also has light skin and reddish-brown hair. Madonna and Child with Saint Elizabeth and Saint John the Baptist

Jacopino del Conte

c. 1535

Oil on panel  Accession ID  1985.11.1

On View: West Building Main Floor, Gallery M21
Shown from the waist up, four people surround a nude infant boy in this nighttime horizontal painting. All the people have pale skin. The pudgy baby has short brown hair and lies on a white cloth, holding the end of a translucent yellow cloth with one chubby hand. The largest person is Mary, who stands just right of center. Her hair is covered by a sheer white cloth, and she wears a lapis-blue robe over a muted rose-pink, long-sleeved dress. She holds her fingertips together over the child as she looks down at him. Two bearded men with gray hair stand to our left of Mary. The leftmost man faces our right in profile. He holds both hands up, palms out and fingers loosely curled toward the child. He wears a soft red cloak over a pale yellow garment. He and the man next to him look down at the baby. That second man holds one hand to his chest over a pale gray cloak, and the rest of his body is lost in shadow. The final person is a clean-shaven man to the right. He tips his head up and holds his hands together in prayer. He wears an olive-green jacket over a white shirt. This person tilts his head back with lips parted and eyes lifted so he looks up and to our left. The background is dark and includes what appears to be a stone building with arched windows. In the deep distance in the upper right corner of the painting, three small people are illuminated by a glow of golden and coral-red light breaking through a bank of dark clouds. A winged angel hovers in the light.
