Join us to view two films exploring the mysteries of time, followed by a post screening discussion with filmmaker Deborah Stratman and author Corina Copp.

Mono Lake documents the exploration of an ancient saline lake at the eastern edge of the Sierra Nevada in California by Robert Smithson, Nancy Holt, and artist Michael Heizer. As they explore one of the oldest lakes in North America, we hear Heizer and Smithson read facts about the site’s geology, indigenous history, and unique ecosystem. Last Things is a conceptually rich and visually stunning essay that imagines evolution and extinction from a geological point of view. Deborah Stratman introduces the geo-biosphere as a place of evolutionary possibility, where humans disappear but life endures and time blurs between past, present, and future. (Deborah Stratman, 2023, French and English with English language subtitles, 16mm to digital, 50 minutes)
