Followed by the late Derek Jarman’s personal meditation and commentary on Britain’s post-empire decline during the devastating Thatcher years: The Last of England stars Tilda Swinton in a dreamlike vision of social urban decay and war. Intercut with these dramatic scenes are Jarman’s own super8 archival home movies which, combined, produce a poetic and haunting portrait of a country in transition, and one very far from the director’s own childhood remembrances.
