Born in the community of Beaumont in the Haute Garonne in France, Jean Vignardonne was the son of Françoise Vignardonne and his wife Guillaumette. Jean became a physician, and from 1805 was attached to the Bureau de Charité in the 10th Arondissement of Paris. From 1811 he served as a médecin ordinaire to the Dispensaire de Salubrite in Paris. In 1827 he was appointed médecin adjoint to the prefecture of police. Reportedly a surgeon in Napoleon's army, according to the catalogue of an exhibition which included his portrait by Gros now in the NGA (1963.10.154), Vignardonne was made chevalier of the Legion d'honneur in 1831.
