Mrs. Heistand was a descendant of Dr. Samuel Boude (c.1723/1724-1781/1791), whose portrait by Benjamin West is now in the NGA (1964.23.7). Boude was probably born in Philadelphia. He settled in Lancaster, where he worked as a physician and apothocary. In 1789 Boude married Mary Bethel, daughter of Samuel and Sarah Blunston Bethel of Landcaster. Dr. Boude's sister Mary married Matthew Clarkson, friend of Benjamin West, who also painted a portrait of Mrs. Boude (NGA 1964.23.8). The Bethel family home in Columbia, Pennsylvania was known as "Mt. Bethel."[Compiled from sources and references recorded on CMS]
