Sir Henry was a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath, and a Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George. He rose to the rank of General in the Royal Army (1919), and was a Colonel Commandant for the Royal Horse Artillery, serving in South Africa (1899-1902), and WWI (1914-18). During both wars he won many medals and honors, including the Croix de Guerre of Belgium and France, and was named a Grand Officer of the Legion of Honour and of the Order of Leopold of Belgium. Educated at Harrow and Woolwich, he received an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from Cambridge and Edinburgh, and an Honorary Doctorate of Civil Law from Oxford. He married Kate McCorquodale, widow of W.J.S. Balcklock, in 1897. They had a daughter, also named Kate.
