Thompson, Prudence Caton

American, late 18th century - early 19th century

Biography

Prudence Caton Thompson was the sister of Anne Thompson Morton of Fell's Point, Maryland, from whom she received a portrait of Anne and Capt. Robert Morton's daughter, Adelina [b. 18 January 1802]. The picture (now in the NGA) was painted around 1810 by Baltimore-based naive painter Joshua Johnson. In 1791, Prudence married Thomas Hammersly of Baltimore. Perhaps widowed, she married secondly in 1803 to Capt. George Hobbs of Laurel, Delaware. Prudence passed the portrait of Adelina Morton to her daughter, Florence Hammersley of Baltimore.
