Phebe Ely Eells was married to the Reverend Ozias Eells [1755-1813]. One of the Reverend's brothers owned a copy of a portrait of their ancestor, Samuel Eells [1640-1709], painted around 1800 by an unknown American folk artist. It is uncertain how the picture (now in the NGA) passed into the Phebe's hands from her brother-in-law, but she in turn gave it to her son, Ozias Shelton Eells [1794-1890], of Johnsonville, Ohio, upon his marriage in 1828.
