Joseph Chamberlaine Hayward ("Chame") was descended through his mother from a nephew of William Hayward of Locust Grove, Maryland. The latter married Margaret Robins [b. 1734] in 1760. Chame inherited a c. 1745 portrait thought to be of Margaret Robins, by an unknown (formerly attributed to John Hesselius) American "naive" painter. Joseph Hayward sold the picture, which is now in the NGA, in 1948.
