Rev. William Boardman was the grandson of Daniel Boardman, a sitter for a NGA painting by Ralph Earl [1948.8.1]. Daniel's father, Sherman Boardman, was a deacon in the Congregational church. Daniel went to Yale College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts degree. He was in business from 1782 to 1793 with his younger brother Elijah, who had opened a dry goods store in New Milford, Connecticut. A captain in the local militia, he represented the town in the state Assembly in May 1790 and October 1792.
