Working at the National Gallery

The National Gallery of Art is a federal government institution and is required to conform to federal civil service regulations and procedures in filling its job vacancies. Most Gallery positions are federally funded; however, there are privately funded positions as well. United States citizenship is required for all federal jobs and for permanent privately funded positions.

There are approximately 1,000 employees working at the National Gallery. While many positions require a background in art history or design, there are numerous other positions for employees involved with aspects of the museum's daily operations. Security guards and officers, visitor services aides, and facilities staff assist the millions of people visiting the Gallery each year. The Gallery also offers employment opportunities in accounting, administration, digital experience, fundraising, information systems, library science, and other technical areas.

All federal positions and many privately funded positions are advertised using the government-wide USAJOBS website, sponsored and maintained by the Office of Personnel Management. Some jobs of a temporary or term nature, supported by grants or other private funds, are announced only on the Gallery's website.
