Nordström working on a plate for Back
to the Land
, 2008, photograph by Kathan
Brown, Courtesy Crown Point Press

The title of this print may refer to the back-to-the-land movement of the 1960s and 1970s or to present-day concerns about the environment. Nordström scraped out a major element in the working proof, removing a flowering bush and replacing it with a mutilated tree and a peculiar group of doll-like characters. The three figures are missing limbs, as are the trees that populate the now scorched and vaguely post-apocalyptic landscape. Nordström traced the figures and other elements in the composition from cutouts that he had made (see examples in slideshow).
